After months of preparation and research, The Dungarvan and West Waterford Chamber has finally launched ‘This is Dungarvan’ app.
The Launch which took place in The Old Market House Arts Centre Dungarvan in March 2013 hosted Camber members and invited guests who got to hear first hand what functions this new asset for Dungarvan can offer. The app ‘This is Dungarvan’, lists all of the Chamber members in a dedicated directory and identifies the location of each member via Google Maps technology. “Basically, anyone standing in the Square in Dungarvan can search for a specific requirement such as a hotel, restaurant, shop or even a WiFi hotspot by using dedicated search icons. The app will identify the nearest location to them and even direct them to that location through a special route finder” says Colette Bannon Chamber President.
“The mobile platform is an ideal vehicle for our members to utilise as it allows instantaneous access to their offerings, in real time, all from your mobile phone” Colette Continued . “The introduction of app technology to be used as a directory for local services and amenities is not new. However, to our knowledge, this is the first time a representative body has taken this technology and incorporated it, positively for its member base, for the benefit of the local, transient and holidaying user”.
Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber has been working to improve the prosperity and business function of its members for two decades. From its premises at the Plaza in the heart of Dungarvan, the Chamber has further improved the awareness of their members by developing what is believed to be Europe’s first mobile app which is dedicated to a Chamber of Commerce. “
Jenny Beresford, Business Development Manager with the Chamber noted “The public are becoming more technologically sophisticated and the increase in smart phones technology means we have to adjust” she said. “We are always interested in new ways to accommodate the flow of information, we have a small window of opportunity especially with transient visitors and we need to ensure accurate and up to date information is made available, quickly. The app is an ideal and logical medium to use”.
Cork based software house DeCare Systems were chosen to develop the app which is available as a free download on the Android and iPhone platform. “This is a perfect vertical for the mobile platform” said Victor Donnelly, Product Development Manager at DeCare Systems “and it is refreshing to see this Chamber having the vision and commitment to embrace this technology and become a first in Europe” he said “we are delighted to be associated with this event”.
The app’s core function is to promote local businesses and tourist information to a worldwide audience, and to accurately identify where these entities are located by utilising the benefits of Google Map technology.
The app will allow accurate pin point locations of businesses and will enable the local population as well as the tourist visitor access to business offerings.
Other interesting items include a ‘What’s On’ guide, ‘Weather Forecast’ and even a ‘Special Offers’ section. The ‘This Is Dungarvan’ app will be updated on a regular basis by a dedicated team within the Chamber offices.
The ‘This Is Dungarvan’ app is now available as a free download from Android Market and the iPhone version.
